Obsessive Compulsive Disorder:
The NICE recommended treatment for OCD is Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT). During your treatment your therapist will assess the components of your OCD and they will work with you to set goals and develop a formulation of the problem. This formulation will provide a template for future work, such as bespoke behavioural experiments and in session cognitive methods. Your therapist may also recommend that a family member, partner or friend attends a session, to help them understand ways to support you.
What to look out for:
Recurrent and persistent thoughts, urges, or images that are experienced as intrusive and unwanted,
Attempts to ignore or suppress thoughts, urges, or images, or to neutralise them with some other thought or action
Repetitive behaviours or mental acts that the individual feels driven to perform in response to an obsession or according to rules that must be applied rigidly.
Behaviors or mental acts are aimed at preventing or reducing anxiety or distress, or preventing some dreaded event or situation; however, these behaviors or mental acts are not connected in a realistic way or are clearly excessive.
An inflated sense of responsibility and the tendency to overestimate threat; perfectionism and intolerance of uncertainty; and over-importance of thoughts and the need to control thoughts.
